hand-dyed fabrics

textures

sponges

On the right is a fairly long length of fabric, dyed entirely with a large round sponge (it was sold as something with which to apply paint to walls). I prepared several colors of thickened dye, and dipped the sponge in each one, applying color until all the white had disappeared. As you can see, purples predominate at one end, dark green at the other.

On the left is a fabric that was made in two phases; the second was an ombre, but before that I put some texture on the cloth in two ways. The brown is thickened dye, applied directly onto the cloth with a stiff broom which had been discarded (I tell ya, you look at the world --and especially trash-- in a different way once you get going on this dyeing stuff!)
